What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune, noncontagious skin rash that leaves parts of the skin red, itchy and scaly. The flakes of skin seen in this skin disease are from overproduction of skin cells. The areas of the skin affected most with psoriasis are the back of the elbows, the front of the knees, and the scalp. This is a chronic skin condition that can be seen in any age but most often begins in early adulthood.

What causes Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is believed to be an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system acts against its own skin cells. This causes chronic skin inflammation and irritation, which leads to the scaling and itching seen in this disorder.  Because it is an autoimmune disease, it can run in families, similar to other autoimmune diseases.

Is Psoriasis contagious?

No, psoriasis cannot be gotten from contact with another person who has the disease. It may run in families (as is true of all autoimmune diseases) but it is not at all contagious.

How long does it take to get rid of Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that cannot be cured.  With treatment, it can take several weeks or even months to resolve a stubborn psoriatic lesion. Most people with psoriasis need lifelong treatment because flareups are always possible.
