What is Holistic Dermatology

Holistic dermatology involves using natural products and remedies to treat many skin conditions. There are many products that exist in nature that can be recommended by your dermatologist to treat itching, inflammation, infectious, and immune-related skin conditions. By using natural dermatology principles, you can make use of things found in nature rather than take harsh medications that may have adverse and unpleasant side effects.

Which natural treatments can be used as cosmetic treatments?

Wrinkles can be treated with carotenoids (found in certain vegetables), green tea, feverfew, coffee berry, and olive oil. Many of these are antioxidants that can reduce the oxidant effects of the sun, while others have natural anti-wrinkle and anti-aging properties that directly improve the appearance of aging skin. Dark spots can be treated with coffee berry, azelaic acid, kojic acid, licorice extract, and vitamin C, which can directly reduce the effects of aging and the sun on these spots.

What are natural skin treatment can I use for other dermatology conditions?

  • Acne can be treated with witch hazel, natural light therapy, zinc, and azelaic acid (found in wheat and barley). Each of these can address the bacterial and inflammatory origin of acne.
  • Skin inflammations like psoriasis, acne, and eczema can be treated with ashwagandha, ginger root, resveratrol, spirulina, and turmeric or curcumin. These remedies often have very powerful anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects on the skin, even as they come from natural substances.
  • Fungal skin infections can be treated with natural products like bitter orange oil, tea tree oil, camphor, and vinegar. Many of these have anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties and can be used instead of prescription anti-fungal medications.
